Getting Started with YouTube Ads

YouTube needs no introduction. It is a household name and the largest video network in the world. In a single month over 1.5 billion people sign in and visit the site. That is a lot of people and some of them are your potential customers! Within the last two years the number of small to medium sized businesses that advertise on YouTube has doubled. All types of businesses have used YouTube to expand their reach and increase revenue. Many companies like ZAGG, which found 75% conversion increase from YouTube, and RevZilla, which saw a 50% revenue growth, have recognized the power of YouTube ads and harnessed it. So how can you be using YouTube ads to drive results for your business? Easy…

1. Start by identifying your target audience.

By defining who your target audience is you will hone in on a goal for your campaign, the specific demographics you want to set as constraints, as well as create the content that will connect with your audience best.

2.   Figure out what type of ad will best serve your needs.

YouTube offers four different types of advertising opportunities. Each one comes at a different price point and is used for accomplishing specific goals. Below is a quick guide to each ad format:

In-Stream: These are longer ads that play before a YouTube video. You’ll find that they are usually related to the content of the video the user is about to watch. You are only charged if a viewer watches 30 seconds worth of your ad, or the entire clip if your ad is less than 30 seconds.

Used best to:

  • Generate leads
  • Increase website traffic
  • Build brand awareness and reach
  • Nurture product and brand consideration

Discovery: These ads appear in search results and/or as recommended videos in the sidebar. They will appear as a thumbnail and you are only charged if the ad is clicked on.

Used best to:

  • Nurture product and brand consideration
  • Build brand awareness and reach

Bumpers: These are short ads that play before a YouTube video and cannot be skipped. Unlike paying for performance, Bumpers are purchased upfront.

Used best to:

  • Build brand awareness and reach

Out-Stream: These are mobile-specific ads (phones and tablet devices) that play on partner websites and within apps. You are charged for these ads when it appears on the screen space for more than two seconds. It is worth noting that these have to be tapped to un-mute.

Used best to:

  • Build brand awareness and reach

3.   Create your content.

Once you have identified your audience and selected your ad experience you then need to create your content. This can be done using your own equipment or even your phone, but we recommend using a professional to help.
